Toes

Here is a question that has bugged me for a while (especially when they re-ran the episode twice in the same month).

In the episode "Kodiak" (First season, episode #7, Maurice's bro dies; Joel and Maggie deliver a baby, Holling hunts Jesse), the legend of Jesse is introduced. Part of the legend as stated in "Kodiak" goes like this: Holling meets Jesse fact-to-face. Holling fires his rifle, shoots off two of the bears toes. Ed even tracks the bear by the fact that it's missing 2 toes. (I haven't seen the tape of this episode in quite a while, but I am sure of this fact).

Fast forward to the episode from season three, "The Final Frontier" (Strange package arrives in Cicely, Japanese tourists come for the Northern Lights, Jesse's found dead). The legend suddenly changes to this: Holling fights Jesse and bites off one of his toes. THe skeleton of the bear has only one toe. What gives? I guess Brand/Falsey were out of town when they made this episode.

So how many toes does/did Jesse have? Does it matter?
Just something I noticed.
